The
2003 America Series emerged as the premier wheelchair racing event
in North America. Backed by increased support from multiple sources
– chief among them being U.S. Paralympics – the America
Series evolved into a coordinated series of road races and track
meets, offering more than $30,000 in prize money.
Thomas
Geierspichler of Austria was the America Series winner, defeating
a stout field that included the top wheelchair racers in the world.
Racing out of the 52 class, the 27-year-old strung together impressive
performances over the weeklong competition. Victories at the Nick
Katsounis Memorial North American Wheelchair 10K Championship, the
Cedartown 5K, the Peachtree Road Race, and in the 1500m and 5000m
Meet in the Heat events assured him status as the top wheelchair
racer in the world.
